2003 NCSI Workshop Information
Participant FAQs
Who is eligible to attend the workshops?
College
and university
faculty who are interested in incorporating computational science activities
into their undergraduate classes are invited to apply.
We encourage participation by faculty who are:
- new to
NCSI,
- returning NCSI graduates,
- participants in NCSI/Sigma Xi
workshops, and
- both college and K-12 participants
of the SC02 Education Program.
Where there is space available, other pre-college teachers
may also apply.
When will I hear about whether I have been chosen to
attend a workshop?
We will notify people by April 18 about acceptance.
What do I have to agree to in order to participate?
Participants must be interested in incorporating some aspect
of computational science into a course or courses back
at their home institutions. In addition,
Participants will be required to:
- fill out pre- and post-workshop surveys to assist in
assessment and evaluation efforts,
- attend the full week of the workshop, from Sunday
evening to Saturday noon,
- present on Saturday an overview of materials to be used
in a course back at home (there will be time during the
workshop for preparation), and
- find support for travel to and from the workshop.
What is in it for me?
The workshops are designed to give faculty ideas that they can incorporate
in undergraduate level courses in mathematics and science, and to expose
faculty to several different modes of computational science modeling.
Participants who attend a workshop will receive:
- room and board for the duration of the workshop,
- workshop materials,
- selected software at greatly reduced cost,
- a stipend to assist in using computational
science in classes back at
their home institutions, and
- first priority sign-up for workshops in subsequent summers.
For more information, see:
These workshops are made possible, in large part, with funding from
the National Science Foundation in support of participation by undergraduate
faculty.
K-12 teachers that attended the SC02
Education Program will have a portion of their costs covered by that
program.
Questions about SC02 support for K-12 teachers should be sent to
Scott Lathrop - [email protected]
Other K-12 teachers that are
able to secure their own funding are eligible to attend.
For those who still need a better idea of
what modeling can do, here, is an informative poster
our partners at Sigma Xi have created.
